Lizi sánchez

b. Lima, Peru, 1975.

Her practice is characterised by an uncannily ‘familiar’ air that leads us down a path of well researched visual references that appeal to our memory. Through her use of colour, fonts and industrial materials she explores the mechanisms by which diverse languages infiltrate our sensibilities. Over the years, Sanchez has made extensive use of advertisement aesthetics, exploring the imbrications of meaning between the visual systems of art and consumer culture.

She holds a Master’s Degree from Goldsmiths College, London and her work has been featured in group presentations including John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery (2016), Whitechapel Gallery (2015) and Studio Voltaire (2010).

The title of Lizi Sánchez’s series of photo-collages, Flappers and Philosophers (2010-11), is borrowed from a collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald published in 1920. The aesthetic of the series also recalls the Russian avant-garde, a time of tension in politics and aesthetics. In this series Lizi Sánchez signals related terms of opposition: on the one hand the fashionable, irreverent, hedonistic and paradigmatically modern young woman, and on the other the cerebral avatar of a revered and ancient male intellectual heritage. But is that right? – can we not imagine a flapper-philosopher, or a philosopher-flapper? (fragment of text by Ed Krčma)
